Codes and Conventions of Music Video

The codes mean there the equipment which are uses and the symbolic codes such as the emotion of people. The convention of a music video is very dependent on what type of genre of music it is, but there are some conventions which can be uses in every genre of music.

Depending on the style of music video, this will depend on the type of camera shots it will have:

A close up will be used on the singers face to be focused on the mouth which moves to the lyrics of the song or it will be used to show the emotion on the face of the character. A close will be used on a prop which has something to do with the story.

A crane shot is used in rock videos or live concert videos, it is useful because it high in the air and will capture all the everything with which is happening. This will show the crowd have the time of there lives will listening and watching the band/artist perform.

The editing of music video depends on the type of genre it is because if the song is fast paced rock song the editing will be lots of quick jumps cuts of the band, instruments or props.

Editing the music video is time consuming because of lip syncing the video to the song and the lyrics so it looks like they are actually singing and in time with the music. CGI is also used in some music videos such as foo fighters learn to fly where one character is flying along side the aeroplane while people are hallucinating. Diegetic sound is also used in music videos but mostly in narrative based like the sound of car driving past or the environment which there are in, but it is also used in performance based where at the end of the bands live performance the crowds cheers will be amplified to show how good the band is.

This song by korn is a mixed between perforamce and narrative based videos because it made like its a documentary and its cut back and forth to them playing and a documentary. Like in this one there is diegetic sound of the cars driving past. The documentary shows the band recking hotel rooms and partying all night, this is what you think you they are doing on tour.

The Mise-en-scene is everything on the stage such as the props, costume and the location. The props depend on what type of video it is, if it was an performance based video the props would be the instruments, equipment and the lighting. The bands costume will determain on the type of genre of the band, now for example if the genre of music was metal the band members will all be wearing dark colours, people can look at them and automatically know what the genre is. The location is the setting for the music video and to set the scene.

The Mise-en-scene for different genres are represented and portryed differently in different genres.

In hip hop and rap genre you will see the objectification of women, the fast car and designer clothing. There are generally two locations first one will be a backdrop where the women will dance and the other will be a music studio or somewere simular where they sing. the two locations will swap between the two.

The song by 50 cent is very typical of what you see in this gener because you got the cars, women and the money and that the message which they are trying to give out, that this is what they have.

In rock music is a performace based video so the location will be them playing live to an audience or them playing in a room. There musical intruments will layed out and there will be clothed in there own merchendise or dark clothing. They will show the crowd alot to show that they are having a great time and implying that you could be have a good time if you see them live.

know this song by guns and rose is a performace based which is used to capture audience to like there music and you will have a great time if you go yourself, its got alot of shots of the crowd have fun and singing along, shows how big the band is by the empty areana in black and white in the morning and then the areana full in colour.

Techniques of Music Videos

Andrew Goodwins theory of music video are his 6 key area of anaysising music video, this 6 key ares are
  1. Genre characteristics
  2. The relationship between lyrics and visual
  3. The star appeal
  4. Intertexuality refernces
  5. Notions of women (objectification of women)
  6. Voyeurism

Genre characteristics

Genre characteristics are while watching the video you will be able to determain what type of music genre the band or artist is. Such as an rock genre music video while have the band playing ive to a live audience or in a random room with only them in, but if the genre would happen to be R&B the video will considerably different such as the artist will be iver walking about singing or dancing. They would have expensive items of clothing which would be on show for parts of the video. This sone by the red hot chilli peppers is fasted pasted editing and lots of cross cuts, This shows that the band is exciting by this type of editing.

The relationship between lyrics and visual

The relationship between lyrics and visual would be if the song is all about love and being together there would scene of a couple being together but if the video has a drum solo or a guitar solo in the song the camera will have close up on the instruments being played. This song show a drum solo at the begining.

Star appeal

Star appeal in the video is where the band or artist face is shown alot and to get the audience familiar with the band or artist and make them a house hold name. Also they will become more famous if people know them more and more.

Intertexuality

Intertexuality is where a music video will have insperation or parts of a film or other media in the music video. The reference can show what type of artist the would to be if the want to be different or it could make people laugh. This song by 30 seconds to mars is set in the hotel and the video acts out the story line of the The Shining.

Notions of women

Notions of women is how women are looked at or vued as an object. Women artists know that they look sexy so they make videos where they are dancing around. The women will dress up in not meny clothes where they releave as much as possible. A good example would be call on me by eric prydz where they are doing an aerobics class in leotards. This technique has been used to get people to keep watching because people will watch women exercising half naken.

The Purposes of Music Videos

A music video is another way to keep the band well know and make more money bacause the artist also get royalties very time it is shown. Artist generally have two or three music videos which is to premote the album of peope to buy. When it is shown on music channels such as MTV or VIVA the performing right society for music while collect money of them, this is also the case for radio station. The internet is a good way for young artist to get them out there of people to here, there are meny artist which wouldn't be as sucessful if it wasn't for youtube or myspace such as Ed Sheeran and meny young rappers. Although artist and bands don't get royalties though youtube and myspace.

Music videos can have some advantages because it keeps the general public talking about them and when word get about the more and more people will watch it and buy it. If you do a quirky or a strange video this will be sucessful with people talking about it. Sound tracks in films there music videos will have clips of the film in there and this could help premote the film and the artist. Here is Will Smith sing the soundtrack for Men in Black which he also stars in.

But the disadvange of music videos is if people don't like the song will boycoted by large groups of people, a good example of this if friday by rebecca black which was laughed at and hated by alot of people. Also if a band has a rubish song out people will think all there songs are like that and wont give them a second chance.

Types of Music Videos

There are Three types of music videos which I could use when i make my own video and these are Performance based, Narrative based and Consept based.

A performance based music video is used well with the rock, indie and R&B genre These work well because the band or singer will be shown playing or dancing, The majority of the video will be them dancing or playing there instraments and maybe some clips of there surrounding or unemportant things or objects. Lady Gaga was usinig here sex appeal in the videos to sell her songs and this is because people will remember her in that way.

The second style of music video are narrative based which as videos which have a story behind it, the story might have something to do with the song or not. The character out of the band will often be in the video as a main character or just for an apperance. In this video the equilibrium in this is that the two couple are getting happily married and the the disequilbrium and recognition is that she bride dies, the reparation is where they go to the funarel and the new equilibrium is that he know she is dead and he can carry on with his life.
The third video which I am looking at is Consept based videos where the video has nothing to do with the song or the band. This is done bacause it is memorable and makes you laugh because it is different than other videos.

Introduction

In this assignment I have to understand the purpose of music videos, I will be do this by looking at the styles, conventions and techniques. I will doing this by looking and describing the three types of music videos, descuss the mise-en-scene, editing and more, I will be looking at the Andrew Goodwins Theory of music videos.
